Why we have to learn how to eat
We are the team working hard to promote the cultivation of mushroom by mushroom sawdust spawn blocks in Hsinchu indigenous villages. We realized that we did not do enough after the government promote the Food Farming Education Law because we only focus on the producers but not the customers and market . All the farmers and producers including us know how the environment affects the quantity, quality and even price of crops. However, the local customers and visitors do not understand the value of food and importance of local agriculture.
Therefore we decided to work with some elementary school in Zhudong to promote food and agriculture education related to mushroom. We had many different expectations and goals such as teachers and students can understand how mushrooms are grown and processed, as well as the impact of agriculture on the environment when we were planning the mushroom farming education course.
Organize courses for food and agriculture education is not easy for us. We need to coordinate and manage different things including venues, lecturers, teaching materials, equipment, etc. It takes time and effort to discuss with different people and organizations and make sure everything happens within time and budget.Especially building a small mushroom garden in school is definitely a huge challenge.
By overcoming these difficulties, we have established deeper relationships with different schools and partners which has also brought us more cooperation opportunities.
We cannot say that we have held valuable educational activities successfully . We only hope that we can help people understand the methods and processes of growing shiitake mushrooms by sawdust spawn blocks to increase their understanding of food and their emphasis on agriculture.
Food and agriculture education indeed allows people to re-understand the relationship between people, land and food. The joy that children can feel and what they can learn in it are the driving force for us to promote more food and agriculture activities in the future. We believe as long as you start doing it, changes will happen. Let us looking forward to more changes in the future!
